Bob, interesting comment. Two observations: (i) The Stoics argue that anger is bad for our character, regardless of whether it may be useful for specific tasks, which they don't deny. (ii) The example you recall is, of course, entirely anecdotal, which is fine. But Seneca would wonder if the player in question could not have achieved the same results, or better, without the anger that damaged his character.
