Burton, Epictetus also says “so that you will be distraught when they die.” That would sound pretty psychopathic to me, if I didn’t know that Epictetus believed in Stoic Providence.

But as I said, a modern Stoic doesn't have to accept the notion of a providential universe in order to accept death as a natural phenomenon, which means also to be prepared for when one of your loved ones dies.
