Clara, I would say that science is in the business of furthering understanding of the natural world, not just collecting more information.

Of course you are right that the answer to “does X make progress?” depends on cultural context. I am talking specifically about the academic culture of western philosophy departments. Or, as a scientist, I would talk about progress in science as understood worldwide in the academy and other research laboratories.
