Clark, thanks for the comments and the links. Buddhism is not usually considered to be a type of virtue ethics (unlike Confucianism), because, as you say, the emphasis is not on character. Still, the number of similarities between Buddhism and Stoicism is remarkable.

One difference is that Stoics very much and explicitly keep in mind the sort of character they are aiming for, as a guide to self-improvement.
