Douglas, I never claimed that there haven't been any new examples of totalitarianism after the two Arendt describes. It's an open question. Does any recent or current regime fit her criteria? It's not enough to be an autarchy. There has to be a totalizing view of world conquest, and a transcendent doctrine (like the laws of history for the Bolsheviks and the laws of race for the Nazi).

Those are -- according to Arendt -- novel in history, meaning that they are not present in autarchies before the 20th century. In my essay I suggest she missed the example of some theocracies, which seem to fit the bill.
