- No, I don’t see the equivalence you make about Socrates and the Stoics. Besides, I *don’t* claim that Socrates’ sacrifice was self-indulgence, because I don’t think he did it for virtue’s sake, but for the sake of his fellow Athenians.
- Again, no, because that list is not connected by “and” but by “or.” So self-satisfaction is a possible motive, but not the only one. Indeed, I would argue that self-satisfaction on its own is not enough.
- I’m confused by why you are even asking whether my view leaves room for okeiosis. One way to understand my argument is precisely that we do virtuous things in order to help others. So okeiosis is fundamental. But why would you say that this implies valuing virtue for its own sake? No, for the sake of others.
