Hermes, again, we need to distinguish automatic responses from cognitively modulated emotions. You seem to be talking about the first, and the Stoics agree: you can’t control them, but you can train yourself to react appropriately.

The story of the pale Stoics crucially hinges on precisely the distinction above: he can’t help going pale (automatic response), but he can help his reasoning (oh my his I’m going to die and that’s terrible!).

I seriously doubt a modern ship crew would allow civilians to mess with emergency situations. And I’m inferring from the story (no reference at all about pumping water, by anyone, not just the Stoic) that it wasn’t a thing then either. You may be thinking about very small vessels, where the situation is different.

I have my doubts that The Rock Warrior's Way is based on Stouc principles, because the latter have nothing to do with sports or climbing. But I haven’t read the book so I’m not going to comment further.
