I don’t think evolution endows purpose, but it does lead to functionality. We do correct even slight eyesight, and being overweight, because they both have negative health consequences. We don’t correct being gay because it doesn’t have health health consequences, other things being equal. Same for left-handedness. Deafness seems to me an obvious case of disability, not just a different life style or choice.
