I think both approaches are necessary. Neuroscientists need to work out mechanisms in the way that is most conducive to scientific understanding. But psychologists and philosophers still need to answer questions such as: is there free will? The answer, sometimes, will be, “no, there is no such thing because at the neural level…” But not all good answers come from lower levels of analysis. It depends.
