I think those notions are different. If the universe were a sentient living organism I would expect things to behave differently than what is described and understood in modern physics.

Moreover, if there is no empirical evidence for a particular proposition (e.g., the simulation hypothesis) I see no reason to entertain the notion seriously, other than a fun thought experiment.
