I think you may be operating under a bit of misunderstanding of what virtue is. To act virtuously in order to become more virtuous isn't the point. Virtue is other- not self-regarding.

As for the Stoic checklist, it is meant as a general framework, a point of reference. Plenty of evidence in psychological research shows that people do better if they have reliable frameworks to guide them.
