Jamie, the original question was the one asked by Tolstoy: if there is no external (meaning, not human-based) meaning in the universe, then life is not worth living. So the trivially true statement is besides the point, that’s not what he was looking for. Surely he understood that there are human beings capable of meaning in the universe, and yet he said that if that was all he might as well hang himself.
