Jason, I don't see a contradiction between the two approaches. Yes, I do think there is something "wrong" with the old Stoa; and yes I am trying, with others, to build on it, thus progressing.
Most of what is wrong with the old Stoa is parts of its metaphysics / science, not surprisingly. But since in the Stoic system metaphysics has consequences for the ethics, we can't just ignore those bits and move on. We have to adjust the whole system.
I don't think this requires major, radical changes. But no other philosophy or religion is practiced today as it was when it was born, and I don't see why Stoicism would be an exception.
