Jim, good points. Two comments: first, science is always about interpreting facts, not just about facts. Second, one can make a very reasonable, evidence-based argument that at least some animals have intentions, based on their behavior, the sophistication of their nervous system, and so forth. No such arguments, I think, can be put forth for a planet or an ecosystem.
