Keith, I’m afraid that observation isn’t very relevant. The ancients need to be judged by their own standards, not ours. And by the standards of the time Marcus Aurelius was an enlightened ruler.

Nobody is forcing anything, in Stoicism. It’s all up to us. And the Stoics very much took on brutal forces that were perpetrating injustice. For instance: Nobody expects the Stoic Opposition!
