Melville, I agree, though an important thing to keep in mind is that in Stoicism ataraxia is not the goal, it is a byproduct of living a virtuous life (which is the actual goal).

The Epicureans, by contrast, aimed directly at ataraxia, and thought of virtue as a conduit to it. In a sense, then, Stoicism and Epicureanism are exact opposites.
