Not sure what you mean by "shallow evolution." I don't believe human beings are evolving in any particular direction, we just change and adapt to our environment.

Perhaps I am protesting too much, as you say, but I've seen plenty of people committing the fallacy of presentism and discarding the good that was done by figures of the past because they don't measure up to these people's contemporary standards.
