Plato definitely went metaphysical, he did not think much of the physical level. Our endowments were necessary for *our* success, not for that of other species. Some species count on strong muscles, some on speed, some on fast swimming, and some on reason. Take reason away from Homo sapiens and we are a barely functional ape with few other natural defenses.
