Steve, my point is that scholars should not be activists while they play the role of scholars or teachers. That is, their scholarship and teaching should be neutral with respect to their political opinions, otherwise they lose credibility.

Of course they (we, I count myself in that group) have the right to express our political opinions. But not while we’re teaching a class, or when we are writing a scholarly paper.
