The tradition of virtue ethics (Stoics, Skeptics, Epicureans) is well established, and so are more modern approaches that do not seek universal answers, like much continental (as opposed to analytic philosophy).

As to why Aristotle and Kant did not take this approach, I don't know. They were still influenced by some version of Plato's notion of universal Ideas, another dead end.
