Timothy, the issue of indigenous knowledge is complex. First, there really is no such thing. Indigenous cultures are varied and their claims to knowledge often contradictory. Second, certainly indigenous people have developed in-depth knowledge of the local environment, local animal species, and local plants. But their general views about the nature of the world are at odds with modern science, and therefore likely incorrect. Also, they often cross the border into mysticism and pseudoscience.Yes, education and urbanization do decrease religious belief. From my point of view that’s a good.Yes, the sociologist needs people on the ground to study the phenomenon of gangs, but she also has a better grasp of the general causes of such phenomenon, and of the possible cures.
