Tushar, I appreciate the spirit of your comments. But I remained convinced that Padilla has to raise the volume of his rhetoric because otherwise people would point out that the reforms he is seeking have been underway for a while.

You ask for examples. We can begin with some of Padilla's own colleagues at Princeton, which he predictably says don't go "far enough." Or May Beard. Or many of my colleagues here, scattered throughout the many campuses of CUNY.

There is also a blog by classicists I came across some time ago that is explicitly devoted to a progressive re-interpretation of the entire field. Can't find the link right now, will look again later.

As for role playing, I maintain my skepticism. I know it is done, and I've seen it done. I don't think it brings the insight that people think it does. Especially when students are asked to interpret roles of people we know close to nothing about.
