Well, whether one can or cannot control something is logically independent on whether one should or should not value something. So I don’t think the dichotomy of control helps here.

As for changing instruments, I don’t think that would work. A happy life for a human being must include a prosocial element, and the practice of virtue is precisely the best instrument to achieve that. Such an objection is analogous to say that one could switch from a hammer to a shoe in order to bang nails. Yes, one could, but why would one want to do that, since hammers are the best tool for the job?
